How Can IG Reels Fit in Your Marketing Strategy?

Instagram is a well-known platform amongst social media marketing channels. But what you may not recognize is their latest feature: Instagram Reels. This new format allows you to post video clips up to 60 seconds long with optional filters and music added. Instagram Reels can be viewed in the Reels Explore Feed which is accessed by clicking the icon that’s currently front and center on your Instagram page. This leads me to my next point.

Why is the IG Reel Icon front and center? Well, Instagram is heavily pushing IG Reels to be their main feature – they want it to succeed. In fact, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has gone on record saying he wants video to be big in efforts to compete directly with TikTok. (Fast Company).

With text overlays, easy video editing, and music + filter combinations that capture viewer attention, the format lends itself particularly well to sharing bite-size information on which a creator has in-depth knowledge. And because the platform itself is prioritizing the presence of IG Reels in user feeds, IG Reels are a perfect, timely tool for boosting brand awareness. For instance, if you’re a law firm, you can post Reels full of legal tips to educate your viewers. By acting as a subject matter expert, you can become the go-to source for your followers’ legal questions. Of course, this may not lead to a large number of conversions, but it does hoist your brand up among other law firms, opening up greater opportunities and potential for more clients. Including IG Reels to your Instagram strategy offers a chance to display your brand’s authority in an engaging, and authentic way.

So now that you’ve gained some insights on what IG Reels are and why you should incorporate them into your social media marketing strategy, let me share some tips on how to get started.

Look at TikTok for the latest IG Reel trends

TikTok is typically one step ahead when it comes to the latest trends. Most IG Reels are repurposed content that originates from TikTok. Understanding this connection is key to staying up to date on latest trends and creating content that will educate or entertain viewers.

Get inspired by other brands

Take a look to see what other brands are doing, specifically brands within your industry. Discover what type of content is performing best and see how you can apply popular approaches to content you create for your own brand.

Include closed captions

Most videos on IG are viewed without sound. In fact, a study from Verizon Media and ad buyer Publicis Media found that 69% of people report viewing videos without sound in public places. You’ll want to be sure to include closed captions so viewers can understand your video even without audio. Without closed captions added, it’s likely viewers will continue to scroll. Adding closed captions also makes your video more accessible to a wider audience including those who have hearing difficulties.

Don’t forget to have fun

We included this last tip because it’s easy to get caught up in the pressure of creating a viral video. Our best advice – don’t overthink it. Content that's too polished and perfect is resonating less and less these days, so a little imperfection is nothing to fear. And the more fun you have creating the content, the more likely it is you'll keep posting and get even better at making Reels over time. Find a trend you find compelling, and just give it your best go.
